the number of participants to no more than 80.

not need to reply to this announcement in order to remain on the e-mailing list. 
However, please register on the conference web site to confirm your

OVERVIEW:
---------

The discovery of supernova (SN) 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud, on 23 
February 1987, has led to the rise of an essentially new branch of astronomy and 
astrophysics which is solely devoted to its study. As the closest SN over the 
past ~400 years, SN 1987A has led to approx. 2,000 refereed publications and 
dozens of press releases which have sparked the interest and imagination of both 
astronomers and the general public. The date of this international conference 
has been chosen to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the discovery of SN 
1987A.

During this international conference, all aspects of the broad SN 1987A research 
topics will be covered: theoretical models on the nucleosynthesis and explosion 
mechanisms, progenitor stars, pulsar and SNR formation, interaction with the 
circumstellar medium, particle acceleration mechanisms, etc. All observed 
wavelength regimes will be discussed, including radio, IR, optical, UV, X-ray, 
and gamma-ray studies, as well as non-photonic emission such as neutrinos and 
gravitational waves. The conference will further include other SNe of all types, 
SN cosmology and Gamma-Ray Bursters (GRBs), with emphasis on SN/GRB connections.

LOCATION:
---------

The conference will be held in Aspen, Colorado, USA. The medium-sized 
conference, the intimate feel of the facility (such as a common lunch and dining 
area), and the ample time during coffee/tea breaks will give this conference a 
productive workshop character providing the basis for effective discussions and 
collaborations. Since Aspen is a premier winter sports resort, we will give 
participants the opportunity to ski during extended afternoon breaks. Discount 
afternoon lift tickets will be available. 

VENUE:
------

We have secured the Aspen Center of Physics as the venue of the conference and 
have made bulk reservations for 40 rooms with single or double occupancy at "The 
Inn at Aspen" for a rate of $239/room/night which includes breakfast and shuttle 
bus service to/from the conference venue. Rooms with one king or two queen sized 
beds are available and can be shared to save costs. The Inn honors the same rate 
in case you would like to extend your visit over the weekend to go skiing. 


FEES AND PROCEEDINGS:
---------------------

The registration fee is US$ 300 until 31 December 2006. After that date, it 
rises to US$400. We expect that talks and poster contributions accepted by the 
scientific organizing committee will be published in printed proceedings, 
although we are still negotiating with publishers.
