Mac OS X instructions for joining EUD wireless network

Please note that one must be running OS X 10.3 ("Panther") or higher in order to use our 802.1X wireless networking authentication.

Setup

Keychain Access

You must have already completed this step.

Network system preference

  • Open "System Preferences" and click on Network.
  • Create a new Location (Location pop-up menu, "New Location...") and give it a name (e.g., "AirEUD" or "EUD Wireless") meaningful to you.
  • Click on "Show" pop-up menu and select Network Port Configurations.
    Uncheck everything except Airport.
  • Now select Airport from the "Show" pop-up menu.
  • Change the "By default, join" pop-up menu to "A specific network".
  • Enter "AirEUD" as the name of the network.
  • Leave the password field blank. (We use more secure per-session keys from the RADIUS server.)
  • [Optional] Click on the TCP/IP tab and enter "gsfc.nasa.gov" in the Search Domains text box. (This allows you to type simple hostnames.)
  • Click "Apply Now" and you may safely exit System Preferences, if you wish.

Internet Connect

  • Start the "Internet Connect" application, found in the main "Applications" folder provided by Apple.
  • Select "New 802.1X Connection...." from the File menu.
If this is grayed out because you have already set up some other 802.1x network elsewhere, please click on the plus sign button ("+") in the "Edit Configurations" pop-up described below to create a new setting.
  • From "Configuration" pop-up menu, select "Edit Configurations".
  • Name this in the "Description" box, e.g. "EUD Wireless 802.1X" or something else meaningful to you.
  • Leave the "User Name" blank. (It will be picked up from your certificate.)
  • Leave the "Password" field blank. (The security derives from your certificate.)
  • Enter "AirEUD" in the "Wireless Network" field.
  • In the Authentication box, check TLS and uncheck everything else. (You will not even be allowed to check the TLS box unless you have already imported the certificate.)
Please note: You need "TLS" checked, not TTLS.
  • Click "OK" button.

Connecting to the network the first time

A few final actions related to certificates happen the first time you access the wireless network.
