Palm T|X instructions for joining the staff CNE wireless network

You can purchase a $6 software/firmware add-on for the Palm T|X PDA that permits it to "speak" to an EAP-PEAP network such as the staff "CNE".

Getting certificates in hand

The staff CNE wireless network has a main and a backup authentication server. You will probably want certificates from both of these in your profile.

Getting Palm's Enterprise Security Update

First of all, please go to: http://www.palm.com/us/software/esu/index.html

From that site, buy the $6 Palm Enterprise Security Update. Make sure to do a complete backup (sync), because you will be required to do a "hard reset" of your Palm.

Follow their directions for installing the upgrade. (Despite their instructions, this step does not require a Windows PC. You will probably want an SD card reader so that you can copy the "Palm" folder from the "TX_Security_Upgrade" folder.)

Profile setup

You will need to install a "profile" to make this work. You can either create your own with the "Profile Wizard" Palm provides (Windows-only) or you can simply download a template profile ("generic...") from the above link.

If you are using the pre-made profile, please skip to the "Uploading your profile to your Palm" section below.

Here's what's involved in creating your own profile:

  • Open the TX_Security_Upgrade folder.
  • Open the ProfileWizard folder
  • Run PalmWiFiProfileWizard.exe
  • Profile Name: Give a meaningful name
  • Authentication Protocol: EAP-PEAP
  • Tunneled Authentication Protocol: MSCHAPv2
  • Username: Enter either your VPN username or Active Directory username
  • Password: Enter corresponding password
  • Certificates section:
Click "Add..." and include the two vpn-acs certificates linked above.
  • Click "Save" (default name is based on your profile name).
  • Here's a screenshot of the completed generic profile. Yours should look like this with the addition of your own name and password.

Uploading your profile to the Palm

Now you need to upload that profile to the Palm via either Bluetooth, a sync operation or by copying it to an SD card.

Here's one method:

  • Create a folder on the SD card called "PalmWifi" and copy your profile there.
  • When you copied the "Palm" folder to your SD card, above, you copied two applications: TX_Updater and WiFiProfile.
  • Insert your SD card into your Palm with the Palm on and displaying the home screen. (Remove and reinsert the card otherwise.)
You should see these two applications.
  • Start the WiFiProfile application and follow the directions. That's it! (for the copy)

Configuration on the Palm

  • Open the "Prefs" application and select "Wi-Fi" in the communications section.
  • Select "Setup..." from this "Preferences" dialog box.
  • You may get a request to scan for Wi-Fi networks; reply 'Yes' to turn the radio on.
  • In the now-open "Wi-Fi Networks" dialog box:
    • In the "Select a network" box, highlight "CNE" and click "Edit..."
    • Click on "Configure..." in the pop-up menu.
    • Network Name (SSID): CNE
    • Security: Enterprise
    • Mode: WPA1/WPA2 (already the default)
    • Encryption: Auto (TKIP/AES) (already the default)
    • Profile:Select profile here that you installed above
    • Click "Edit Profile Settings"
    • Username and Password
      • If you used the generic template, above, then you need to enter your username and password here. You can use either your VPN username and password or your Active Directory username and password.
      • If you created your own profile, you should see your username already listed and a password listed as "-Assigned-".

Click "OK" to exit from "Set Profile Username"
    • Click "OK" to exit "Wi-FiNetwork"
  • You should immediately get a window titled "Connect to Network" which says "Would you like to connect to 'CNE' now?"
    Click "Yes".
  • Done! You should now be able to try out the web browser or other Internet-enabled applications.
