UMD/EUD Fellowship Program
A GSFC sponsored fellowship program in high energy astrophysics is
administered by the University of Maryland
(UMD). Students wishing to be considered for this opportunity should
apply to the Department of
Physics if interested in a graduate program in physics or the Department of Astronomy for graduate
work in astronomy. Qualified candidates will be invited to visit the
university and the EUD at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
The fellowships are for one year, carry a stipend of $18,000 for the
academic year (2000-2001) plus remission of tuition as a supplemental
support enabling the full-time course program required for the initial two
semesters. Those students awarded this fellowship will be expected to
become acquainted with active investigations in the field of high energy
astrophysics by accepting a supplementary appointment as a university
research assistant for work at the EUD during the summer between their
first and second academic years. Those fellowship recipients in good
standing at the end of their first academic year will have the
opportunity, during that summer, of defining a preliminary research
project to be conducted at the EUD; this project is then carried out
during the second academic year under a research assistantship with
benefits comparable to the initial fellowship. Upon passing the qualifying
exam for PhD candidacy and exhibiting appropriate potential, a university
research assistantship at the EUD will be available to program
participants for completing the degree requirements.
