Director of HEASARC

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
AAS Job Advertisement 24306 (to appear December 1, 2007)

The Astrophysics Science Division (ASD) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has an immediate opening for the position of Director of the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC). The HEASARC was established to support and expand the use, by the broadest possible community, of high energy astrophysics data through guest observer programs, data analysis software, data processing, mission and science operations, instrument calibration, multi-mission standards and archive access. The HEASARC is responsible for dedicated science facilities to support the specialized needs of particular missions. Currently these are the Suzaku, XMM-Newton, GLAST, INTEGRAL, WMAP, Swift, and XTE missions. Data from these and older missions are also included with future mission data added as appropriate. The HEASARC is also responsible for administering the guest observer programs for these missions, and other future high energy astrophysics missions. The HEASARC is a partnership between GSFC and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory through a cooperative agreement, and the Director oversees the development of that partnership. The HEASARC is also part of the consortium developing the National Virtual Observatory. For more information about HEASARC, please visit the website: http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/.

The Director participates in the day-to-day management of scientific and technical issues and administrative responsibilities relative to the HEASARC. This includes management of personnel, procurements, grants, and contracts.

The successful applicant is expected to carry out an active research program in high energy astronomy, such as x-ray and gamma ray astrophysics, relevant to the strategic goals of NASA and the HEASARC. The incumbent should be an internationally recognized scientist.
