Internships

ProgramDescriptionApplication Deadline
The Scientific and Engineering Student Internship (SESI) The SESI program is a joint program with the Physics Department of the Catholic University of America (CUA), ASD/GSFC and Science and Exploration Directorate at GSFC. Student opportunities are open in all divisions of the Science and Exploration Directorate including the Astrophysics Science Division (ASD), the Earth-Sun Exploration Division, the Laboratory for Solar and Space Physics, the Solar System Exploration Division and other research. March 1, 2008 (US Citizens)
The NASA Academy The NASA Academy represents an immersive and integrated multidisciplinary exposure and training, for students with various backgrounds and career aspirations of critical importance to the National aerospace program. The academic curriculum balances opportunities for direct contact with advanced science and engineering R&D and an awareness of the complex managerial, political, financial, social, and human issues faced by the current and future aerospace programs. January 15, 2008
The Student Internship Program (SIP) NASA SIP is designed for students whose primary interest is in space related research. SIP is an intensive 10-week summer research program for diverse undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in aerospace-related fields. SIP brings students from universities to GSFC to support ongoing research projects generally by participating in a project that has received an award from the Director's Discretionary Fund (DDF). Students team with a Principal Investigator (PI) at GSFC for cutting edge research in science or engineering. The students may have the opportunity to participate in field trips to other NASA Centers, as well as to local space industry sites. January 15, 2008
American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) The AISES Intern Program is a 10-week summer program that provides qualified AISES students with internship opportunities to explore potential federal service with NASA and gain hands-on experience in their field of study. The internship is a student learning work experience in which the intern is paired with a mentor from Goddard's scientific or engineering laboratories through a match between the Lab's requirements for a project and the student's background, academic level and interests. February 15, 2008
DC Space Grant Intern Program The DC Space Grant Consortium (DCSGC) program is a NASA fall semester paid internship that matches students with NASA mentors at both NASA Headquarters, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Members of underrepresented and/or undeserved groups are encouraged to apply. Students team with a principal Investigator (PI) at GSFC for research in science or engineering. Students must work between 15-20 hours per week and submit monthly evaluation forms. Please check with a point of contact for current year information.
Summer Institute in Engineering and Computer Application (SIECA) This program provides participants with a 10 week "hands-on" work experience in various space-related scientific and technological fields. Training in needed computer languages or other specific skills required for projects is also provided. The primary objective of SIECA is to broaden the participants' professional perspectives through exposure to a variety of research/application environments. Students are eligible to receive college credits from Bowie State University for the internship. The majority of students who have participated in SIECA over the past years have been enrolled in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. January 15, 2008
Special Project Interns (SPI) Students or Faculty members are paired with a scientist or engineer in a laboratory setting at Goddard Space Flight Center or Wallops Flight Facility to actively participate in a research project using the expertise of a mentor. This program is designed to cover special needs and opportunities not addressed by our other student and faculty programs. January 15, 2008
National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program (NSGCFP) Provides specialized training and education programs to help maintain the United States capabilities in aerospace science and technology, and education, and capitalizes on the multiple opportunities afforded by the space environment. Each state consortium is challenged to establish a national and statewide network of universities with interests and capabilities in aeronautics, space, and related fields; to encourage cooperative programs among universities, aerospace industry, and Federal, state and local governments; to encourage interdisciplinary training, research, and public service programs related to aerospace; to recruit and train professionals, especially women, underrepresented populations, and persons with disabilities for careers in aerospace science and technology; and to promote a strong science, mathematics and technology education base from elementary through secondary levels. At the discretion of each consortium.

Fellowships

ProgramDescriptionApplication Deadline
The Graduate Student Research Program (GSRP) The goal of NASA's GSRP is to cultivate research ties to the academic community, to help meet the continuing needs of the Nation's aeronautics and space effort by increasing the number of highly trained scientists and engineers in aeronautics and space-related disciplines, and to broaden the base of students pursuing advanced degrees in science, mathematics, and engineering. Research opportunities described in this solicitation are assessed and updated annually to complement the mission requirements of NASA. Research areas are in disciplines that lead to aeronautics and space careers. February 1, 2008
Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP)

http://www.education.nasa.gov/
http://www.uncfsp.org/

NASA and the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) jointly administer Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP). JPFP annually offers a three-year fellowship and provides outstanding opportunities for research, mentoring and networking. The goal of the program is to increase diversity and employ the best practices for advancing the number of women, minorities and disabled persons who receive graduate degrees in the NASA-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and workforce. Applicants that are accepted for the MINI Research Award Program travel to a NASA Center in order to receive hands-on training in an area that is closely aligned with their research interest. Generally February 1 - Please check with JPFP Project Manager, United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP).
Astrophysics Division Fellowship The ApD fellowship program offers an opportunity for University of Maryland (College Park) physics and astronomy graduate students to explore undertaking a PhD dissertation with a mentor at Goddard.

This fellowship pays the students' first year stipend. The student is required to work at Goddard over the summer (but not necessarily during the academic year). A mutual decision then has to be made whether to carry on with the thesis work. Typically one award is made each year.

Offer made at the time of discussions about admission to graduate school at the University of Maryland, College Park.
